North Carolina Trauma Center Designation Guidelines

In North Carolina, trauma center designations are assigned by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services (NC OEMS). North Carolina uses a level system to designate the type of trauma care available at each center:

  • Level I trauma centers provide the highest level of comprehensive care for traumatic injuries. They maintain specialized teams of surgeons, emergency physicians, nurses, and equipment available 24/7. They also serve as research and teaching facilities.
  • Level II trauma centers offer similar services to Level I centers but may not have the same research and education requirements.
  • Level III trauma centers provide initial evaluation, stabilization, and emergency operations for trauma patients. They have transfer agreements with Level I or II centers for patients requiring more comprehensive care.
  • Level IV trauma centers provide initial evaluation and assessment of injured patients and prepare patients for transfer to higher levels of care when needed.
