Reviewing statistics on deadly motorcycle accidents

If you enjoy riding a motorcycle, or someone in your family has this hobby, you likely worry about the risk of a deadly accident. Fatal motorcycle accidents occur for various reasons and by going over statistics on these crashes, you can understand how widespread these accidents actually are.

Sadly, motorcyclists are in an especially vulnerable position when a motor vehicle accident occurs. When compared to those riding in passenger vehicles, they are far more likely to lose their lives.

How many motorcyclist fatalities occur?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5,014 motorcyclists lost their lives in traffic collisions over the course of 2019. During 2018, 5,038 motorcyclists passed away in accidents on the road. In fact, these motorcyclist fatalities represented 14% of all traffic accident deaths in 2019.

Fatal motorcycle crashes are more likely to occur on urban roads in comparison to rural roads. In 2019, 66% of fatal motorcycle accidents took place outside of intersections and 55% occurred during daylight hours.

Which age group sees the most fatal motorcycle accidents?

In 2019, 674 motorcyclists between 25 and 29 lost their lives in traffic accidents, more than any other age group. However, many older motorcyclists die in accidents as well. 510 motorcyclists 65 and older died in traffic accidents and 508 between 55 and 59 died in crashes.

Motorcyclists face the risk of a deadly accident regardless of their age, the roads they ride on and other factors. If a negligent driver caused your loved one to pass away, you need to seek justice and hold the driver accountable.
