WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -The Wilmington Police Department is investigating a fatal accident that happened early Tuesday morning on Carolina Beach Road.
Authorities say 19-year-old Marjorie Jean Whitney was driving southbound on Carolina Beach Road between Independence and Shipyard Blvd., when she rear-ended the car in front of her.
According to police, Whitney was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.
The second vehicle (the car that was struck) was propelled into a nearby car lot where it damaged several other cars.
The male driver of the second vehicle was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Neither of the drivers involved had other passengers.
This is the first traffic fatality of 2010 in the city of Wilmington.
