STATESVILLE, NC - A long-time Virginia Department of Forestry died Saturday as the result of a freak accident on Interstate 40. William Alexander (Alex) Williamson, 59, of Alton, Va. died at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Trooper Michael Brown of the N.C. Highway Patrol said Williamson was driving a sport utility vehicle west on Interstate 40 Friday night. His SUV was in the right travel lane and merging into the left lane around the 164 mile marker, which is in Davie County. An aluminum disk, about three feet in diameter, glanced off the interstate and bounced through the windshield of the SUV, striking Williamson in the head, the trooper said. Williamson was knocked out by the impact.
Brown said WIlliamson's sister-in-law, Martha, who was riding in the front passenger seat, tried to get the vehicle stopped, but it was another four to five miles before she was able to do so, and by then the car was in Iredell County. The vehicle's cruise control was set about 70 mph, passengers told Brown.
Williamson's wife, Betty was seated behind him and an unidentified passenger was in the right rear passenger seat, Brown said.
Passengers in Williamson's vehicle called 911 and emergency crews from Iredell responded to the scene. Williamson was initially taken to Davis Regional Medical Center and then taken to Baptist. Brown said scuff marks indicated the disk likely came from the road. He said he is working with the N.C. Department of Transportation in an attempt to determine why the disk was in the road.
After striking Williamson, it landed in the back seat of the SUV. The passengers in the SUV also sustained injuries. Williamson worked for the Virginia Department of Forestry for 35 years and was the chief forest tech in Halifax County.
