The driver of a truck involved in an accident that killed 35 cows near Lillington Sunday night has now been cited with a traffic violation.

Jonathan D. Leggett, 37, of Chesterfield, Va., is charged with failure to reduce speed. He was driving a truck filled with 46 cows that hit a car on U.S. 421 west of Lillington just before midnight Sunday.

Trooper J.B. Barbour with the North Carolina Highway Patrol said Mr. Leggett, who was traveling south on U.S. 421, could not stop in time to avoid hitting the Ford sports utility vehicle stopped in front of him, turning into Manor Hills. The SUV was driven by Rameen Flood, 22, of Linden. Mr. Flood was cited for not wearing his seatbelt. The impact of the crash sent the trailer full of cattle down a 40-foot embankment. Thirty-five of the animals were thrown from the truck and died. The animals who survived were trapped in the trailer and were later transferred to another trailer and removed from the scene. The cows were headed to a slaughter house in Godwin.

Both drivers were taken to Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital where they were treated and then released.

It took more than eight hours to remove all the animals and vehicles from the scene. Traffic had to be detoured around the scene during the Monday morning rush hour.

Trooper Barbour said it was an unusual scene.

“I have never been to one involvingcows so it was definitely alittle different,” he said.

“At least there weren’t cows running around, so that was a good thing.”
