Mt. Airy Car Accident

Four people were transported by ambulance following an accident on N.C. 89 West in front of the Bottom Dollar store Saturday. The road was shut down in both directions while rescue crews treated the injured and cleaned up the accident scene.

Mount Airy Police Officer Brendon Evans said a Chevy Malibu driven by Kelly Jo McCray, 17, pulled out of the parking lot and into the path of a silver Chrysler mini-van being driven by Donald Thompson. He said McCray pulled into the roadway heading east as a car turned into the parking lot. Evans said she didn’t see the mini-van that was in the far lane heading west.

The accident happened shortly after 5:33 p.m.

Both drivers were treated at Northern Hospital of Surry County. In addition, Thompson’s wife, Lavon, and McCray’s passenger, Kristen Simmons, 16, went to the Northern Hospital of Surry County with non-life-threatening injuries.

Evans said McCray was cited with failure to yield the right of way.

The highway was reopened at 6:08 p.m.

“Everybody seemed to be in good spirits,” said Evans after visiting with everyone at the hospital.
