CONOVER, NC – A two-year-old child was seriously injured after the car he was riding in was struck by a hit and run driver Friday night.

The accident happened around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Emmanuel Church Road and Travis Road.

According to Conover Police Chief Steve Brewer, the child and three adults were in a car that was struck by Fred Langford, 46, of Catawba.

Police said Langford rear ended the car and continued driving away from the scene.

The child was initially taken to Catawba Valley Regional Medical Center and later transferred to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem.

On Monday, Brewer said the child was still listed as unconscious when he checked with the hospital on Sunday. The child is expected to make a full recovery.

"This is proof that child seats work," Brewer said.

None of the other three people in the car with the child were seriously hurt.

Langford turned himself into the police department on Sunday. He has been charged with felony hit and run, reckless driving, and driving with a permanently license revoked.

He was given a $6,500 bond and is being held in the Catawba County Jail. He was scheduled to make a first appearance in court on Monday.
