DURHAM, N.C. — A 21-year-old Durham man was charged with driving while impaired after the car he was driving struck and killed a 48-year-old woman crossing Fayetteville Street Thursday night, police said.

Brendan Duan Bass, of Ahlambra Court, faces additional charges of driving without a license, driving without insurance and using fictitious tags in connection with the collision that killed Vickie Elaine Riley, of Durham.

Officers also served Bass, of Alhambra Court, with an outstanding warrant stemming from a March 30, 2009, armed robbery on Alhambra Court.

Police said Bass was driving in the left southbound lane on Fayetteville Street when he hit Riley. He then lost control of his 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass and struck a Mercury Mountaineer in the right lane, which then hit a utility pole. The Oldsmobile jumped a curb, struck a sign, crashed through a chain-link fence and hit a parked car.

Riley was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Bass and the driver of the Mercury weren't seriously injured.

Bass was in the Durham County Jail Friday under a $280,000 bond.
